Step-by-step guide: "French braid"

Take a strand of hair in the spot where you want your French braid.

Divide the strand in 3 equal parts, cross right strand over middle, and then left strand over middle.

Then add additional hair from the sides every time you cross over the middle.

Continue braiding down to the length you want the braid to be.
